Brighter Days

There was an article in the Sitka paper with the headline "Sun returns to Barrow." I think it was January 25th and it stated that the sun had risen that day in Barrow for the first time since November. After more than two months the city was finally going to see sun again even if it was expected to rise at 1:06pm set at 2:13pm. Here in Sitka we get a little sun everyday, unless it's over cast due to rain. In fact that very day Sitka gained 3 minutes and 57 seconds of daylight. With the sun rising at around 8:00 and setting at 4:30 we're now getting a full 8 1/2 hours of sunlight. Here's a photo of sunset today at 4:30pm.

New Year's Resolutions

Here we are well into the New Year and I felt like asking, “Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions?” I have, and here they are:

Lose weight/eat right
Read more books
Write more (in my blog and in general)

On the 1st of January I spent several hours on-line searching for some site to use as a tool in my weight loss/eat right goal. Weight Watchers is good, I’ve used them before but they cost money and I’m too cheap. I found one site that allowed me to take an eating profile quiz. I found out I’m a night time nibbler, all or nothing, persistent procrastinator. The first two I could handle, in fact I wasn’t even surprised. But a “persistent procrastinator”? How am I ever going to accomplish anything? I guess this explains my sporadic postings of late.

But it’s January 21, 2007 and I’m still sticking to my diet. I’ve read 2 books (keeping in line with my 1 book a month goal). And I’m finally writing my next blog. So help keep me accountable, I promise to write again tomorrow. If I slack off, feel free to write and give me a gentle prod. And if you want to share your resolutions, I'd love to hear from you.

Happy New Year

January 1 not only marks the beginning of a new year but it also marks our 6th month anniversary of moving to Sitka. For the past 6 months Steve and I have spent a lot of time exploring Sitka and getting to know it’s residents.
Since arriving here in July I’ve sold produce for Chelan, served coffee at the Back Door and landed a full time job with the Sitka School District. I’ve also: barfed over the side of 2 different boats, paddled a kayak around Japonski island and rowed a dingy to Mt Edgecumbe. I’ve danced with a halibut at the Stardust ball and been entertained at the monthly grind. Weather-wise, there’s been some sun and I’ve watched it rain, snow, sleet, hail and rain some more. I’ve worked with some wonderful ladies at the White E and shopped at dozens of garage sales. Steve and I have climbed to the top of Verstovia and Mt Edgecumbe (and slid most of the way down). We’ve watched the northern lights and examined tide pools; seen bears, dear, eagles, otters, ravens, seals, whales and slugs.
We love Sitka and even though we’ve explored and experienced a lot of what Sitka has to offer, it is really the people here who make Sitka such a special place. I can’t list everyone we’ve met and become friends with but I’ll just say thanks, you know who you are. We look forward to continued adventures in Sitka and meeting many more of its great citizens.

Christmas Pics

Trying to get a good photo of the boys and Jenny can sometimes be difficult. This is what we were able to get.
