Eagles

I've noticed a lot of sea life on my blog lately, so to mix things up here are some shots of eagles. I don't mind the eagles so much any more now that I know they didn't eat my cat.

Herring Tender

A few months ago Steve helped deliver a baby who was named Katie Thompson. Parents Harold and Lizzy were so grateful to Steve they invited him out on their Herring tender boat when the Herring fishery opened.

That's Katie, Lizzie and Harold in the cabin of the St. Lazaria. The Thompson's live aboard the St. Lazaria while not home in Petersburg. During the Herring fishery tenders transport the caught herring from the seining boats to the docks. Steve got to spend an day fishing with the Thompson's aboard the St. Lazaria.

King Salmon

I'm going to interrupt the herring fishery with a quick post about Steve's first King Salmon. Here in Alaska it seems that the most prized fish is the King Salmon. They have a tender pink to reddish flesh and can get very large. People travel from all over the world to fish the Alaskan waters hoping to hook one of these babies. Here's a couple of shots of Steve's first King Salmon.

More Herring Shots

When the Herring run the sea life goes crazy. Humpback whales, sea lions, eagles and gulls all feast on the herring and their eggs. It's amazing to see the feeding frenzy and be in the midst of it in Sitka Sound.

The Herring are Running

Herring are fish that migrate to the Sitka area each year in March/April. The Herring trawlers net them and sell them for their roe and/or for bait. Herring eggs are loved by the native people here. So here are some pics of the boats as they prepare to seine herring.

Steve's Halibut

The other day Steve caught two halibut. Halibut are really odd looking, similar to a flounder, but they are very tasty.

Where have I been?

Wow, I haven't written in almost 2 months:(
So quick update: We bought the lot, have met with builders, inspectors, poured over floor plans and spent a lot of time getting info from my dad. Thanks dad, can't wait for you to come out and help us get our house finished.

I spent last Saturday working at the fruit stand and Just wrapped up testing at the high school.
I've also finished my first quilt. A baby quilt for my first grand child. Steve and I have been out fishing and boating and watching whales.

I guess we really have been busy, but I promise to be more consistent in my blogging. So until tomorrow...good night.
